The Swedish newsprint market contracted from 124.1 million dollars in 2018 to 61.4 million dollars in 2022. After falling to 73.6 million dollars in 2020, it rebounded to 83.6 million dollars in 2021 before declining again.

In 2022, ownership consolidation in the newspaper industry, title closures, and falling print advertising revenue reduced demand for newsprint. The EU's proposed Media Freedom Act and a new Swedish Consumer Sales Act that strengthened digital purchase protections also altered market conditions, while continued digitalization shifted consumption away from print.

Sweden's newsprint production value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 325.5 million US dollars, representing a 31.7% year-on-year decrease. Production peaked in 2018 at 536.6 million US dollars, which marked the largest annual increase of 6.6%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 35.3%, with an average annual decline of 13.5%.

Exports newsprint from Sweden

Exports in kind, K t

Sweden's newsprint export volumes declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 545.1 thousand tonnes, marking a 22.4% year-on-year drop. Exports peaked in 2018 at 781.7 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest annual increase of 2.3%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 28.7%, with an average annual decline of 10.7%.

Sweden's newsprint export value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 277.1 million US dollars, down 31.7% from 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 444.7 million US dollars, which experienced the largest annual increase of 19.3%. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 25.7%, with an average annual decline of 9.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Sweden's newsprint export value was widely distributed across partner countries. The lowest point was in 2019 at 32.8 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest annual decline of 36.7%. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 21.4%, with an average annual decline of 7.7%.
