Earlier Report Observations

The Argentine newsprint market volume fell sharply from 122.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 44.2 thousand tons in 2021. This decline was driven by the structural drop in print newspaper sales, which reduced demand for newsprint. Papel Prensa, the dominant state-influenced producer, reconverted part of its capacity to corrugating paper, shrinking newsprint supply. Additionally, Papel Prensa's price increases of 79% over six months in 2018 made newsprint more expensive for publishers, further dampening consumption. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 added temporary pressure on economic activity and demand.

Market volume began to recover in 2022, rising to 50.0 thousand tons, and reached 58.9 thousand tons in 2023, indicating a partial reversal of the previous decline. In 2024, legal modifications deregulated newsprint production and sales, allowing Papel Prensa to set prices freely and eliminating its obligation to supply the domestic market.
