Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for industrial fatty acids and acid oils in Turkey initially rose from 166 thousand tonnes to 173 thousand tonnes in 2019, partly due to the entry of new players and capacity expansions by existing firms. However, in 2020, supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to a decline in the market to 166 thousand tonnes. Concurrently, updated regulations on waste oil management mandated licensed transportation and advanced recovery technologies, affecting producer operations.

In 2021, a sharp 151% surge in imports intensified competitive pressure, supporting a modest market recovery to 170 thousand tonnes. The following year, the introduction of import tariff quotas valid until February 2026 provided flexibility in raw material sourcing, helping to drive market growth to 198 thousand tonnes. During this period, regulations on waste oil disposal were further tightened with heavy penalties for unlicensed activities.

The market volume dropped significantly to 120 thousand tonnes in 2023. This decline was primarily driven by changes to the Food Additives Specifications Regulation, which required compliance by March 2024 and disrupted production and import processes.
