Between 2018 and 2022, production of industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids and acid oils in Spain showed notable changes. Output rose by 6.2% to 158.7 thousand tonnes in 2019, then saw a slight contraction of 2.3% in 2020 before a more pronounced decline of 18.2% brought it to 126.8 thousand tonnes in 2022. The overall market volume followed a similar pattern, remaining stable near 341–347 thousand tonnes through 2020 but falling by 16.3% to 285.6 thousand tonnes by 2022.

Trade flows experienced significant volatility across the period. Imports peaked at 332.3 thousand tonnes in 2021 and again at 398.3 thousand tonnes in 2024, marking a 33.7% surge from the previous year. Exports also reached a high of 118.1 thousand tonnes in 2021, stabilized in 2022, then dropped by 10% in 2023 before recovering somewhat in 2024.

A key industrial development occurred in 2023 with the formation of a strategic alliance between Grupo Natac and IFFE Biotech, aimed at creating a leading player in natural and health ingredients. This partnership included plans for a large Omega-3 production plant in As Somozas, designed with an annual capacity exceeding 10 000 tonnes. The facility was scheduled to commence operations in 2024, representing a significant addition to Spain's domestic production infrastructure for fatty acids.
