Earlier Report Observations

The registration of 17 new sugar beet varieties in 2018, many with nematode tolerance, provided a foundation for more stable raw material supply for molasses production. This likely supported the increase in output from 509 thousand tons in 2018 to 619 thousand tons in 2019, while the domestic market volume also grew slightly to 301 thousand tons. However, production declined over the next three years, falling to 508 thousand tons in 2022, even as market volume remained near 300 thousand tons, aided by lower export levels.

Scientific studies in 2022 highlighting the health benefits of flavonoids found in molasses potentially stimulated consumer interest, coinciding with new EU regulations clarifying the product's legal classification. A new market segment for tobacco-free molasses also emerged, reflecting shifting consumer preferences. During this period, market volume held steady, reaching 299 thousand tons in 2022, despite a continued dip in production.

The market dynamics shifted sharply from 2023 onward. Production rebounded strongly to 595 thousand tons in 2023 and further to 747 thousand tons in 2024. However, a simultaneous surge in exports, which more than doubled to 463 thousand tons in 2023, drastically reduced domestic market volume to 151 thousand tons. A partial recovery to 229 thousand tons occurred in 2024 as production increases offset continued high export volumes.
