Demand for molasses in the region has been shaped by its expanding use in animal feed, pharmaceuticals, personal care, and especially rum production. A broader consumer shift toward natural sweeteners and the sustainable utilization of sugar cane byproducts provided additional support. Market volumes were also affected by supply-side conditions, including sugar cane availability and climatic factors influencing local sugar production.

In 2019, Caribbean molasses production reached its peak at 778.9 thousand tonnes, marking a significant 14.9% increase from the previous year. However, production declined to 759.7 thousand tonnes in 2020, a modest 2.5% decrease compared to 2019. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 677.7 thousand tonnes, which represented a substantial 9.9% drop from the year before.

Molasses production in the Caribbean has grown for two consecutive years. In 2020, the output was valued at 118.0 million US dollars, a 4.8% increase from 2019. This followed a 10.7% rise in 2019. Caribbean molasses exports have declined for two consecutive years. In 2020, exports totaled 109.0 thousand tonnes, a sharp 10.2% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 17.7%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -6.3%. The highest export volume was in 2018 at 154.7 thousand tonnes, which marked a 16.8% increase from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 21.6% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States was the primary market for Caribbean molasses exports, accounting for 83.4% of total export volumes. Other destinations made up the remaining share.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 18.3%, with a CAGR of -6.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 23 223 thousand US dollars, showing a 12.0% increase from the previous year. Caribbean molasses imports have increased for two consecutive years. In 2020, imports reached 120.6 thousand tonnes, a strong 15.1% gain compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 26%, with a CAGR of 8.0%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 66.8 thousand tonnes, which saw a 30.2% decline from the previous year. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 56.9% rise.
