Between 2018 and 2024, Poland's imports of lactose and lactose syrup fluctuated, reaching a high of over 17 000 t in 2019 before declining and then recovering steadily. Exports were highly volatile, with significant year-to-year changes that affected the trade balance.

From 2021 onward, domestic production saw a dramatic increase, more than doubling from 10 000 t to over 19 000 t by 2023. This surge in output led to a substantial expansion of the local market, with market volume growing from 347 t in 2021 to 12 212 t in 2023, while trade remained active in 2024.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Exports reached their maximum in 2018 at 33 023 tonnes, then fell to their minimum in 2019 at 17 824 tonnes, representing a 1.9-fold decline. In 2020, Poland's cross-border shipments of lactose and lactose syrup amounted to 30 932 tonnes, which is 73.5% higher than in 2019. The largest decline of 46.0% was recorded in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, China, the Netherlands, and Vietnam were the main markets for exports in kind. China accounted for 30.3% of exports, the Netherlands for 22.9%, and Vietnam for 8.9%. Together, these three countries represented 62.0% of total export flows.

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout the period. Export values fluctuated, with a 2.2-fold difference between the high in 2020 and the low in 2019. In 2020, Poland exported lactose and lactose syrup worth 28 972 thousand US dollars, marking a 120.6% increase compared to 2019. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 13 135 thousand US dollars, and the largest decline of 30.9% also occurred in that year.

Between 2017 and 2020, China, the Netherlands, and Germany remained the principal buyers of lactose and lactose syrup from Poland in value terms. After a two-year increase, Poland's imports of lactose and lactose syrup declined. In 2020, imports totaled 13 063 tonnes, showing a significant decrease of 24.8% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 17 366 tonnes. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 26.8%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 8.2%. The largest increase of 45.2% was observed in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, Israel, the Netherlands, and Germany stood out as the main sources for imports in kind. Israel accounted for 37.7% of imports, the Netherlands for 27.0%, and Germany for 15.3%. Together, these three countries represented 80.1% of total import flows.

Following a two-year gain, Poland's imported volumes of lactose and lactose syrup declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 20 136 thousand US dollars, a slight decrease of 0.8% from 2019. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 20 306 thousand US dollars. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 49.7%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 14.4%. The largest increase of 42.4% occurred in 2018.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Israel, and Germany formed the main cluster of markets for imports in value terms. The Netherlands accounted for 27.9% of imports, Israel for 27.8%, and Germany for 26.9%. Combined, these three countries held an 82.7% share of total import flows.
