After a stable start in 2018 with a market volume of 189.5 thousand tons, Ecuador's molasses market declined over the next two years. A rebound occurred in 2021, lifting the market to 189.0 thousand tons. This recovery was driven by an expansion in the harvested sugarcane area to 130 398 hectares, which increased the supply of molasses as a core by-product of sugar processing.

Market volume then contracted to 175.9 thousand tons in 2022 and fell sharply to 108.8 thousand tons in 2023. The period saw no major reported events in production capacity or significant new drivers that could counter the downward trend.

In 2024, the government enacted a tax reform imposing stricter penalties for electronic invoicing non-compliance and adjusted national fuel pricing. These regulatory changes directly affected the operational costs and compliance framework for the agro-industrial sector, including molasses producers.

Ecuador's molasses production increased after two years of decline. In 2019, production reached its lowest point at 143.0 thousand tons, but then rose to 145.0 thousand tons in 2020, marking a 1.4% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 9.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.2%. The most significant drop occurred in 2018, with a decrease of 6.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 9.1%, averaging a 3.1% annual decline. The peak was in 2018 at 39 499 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 32.4%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 17.1%, with an average annual rate of -6.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 6 230 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 21.2%.
