Earlier Report Observations

The sugar market in Burkina Faso is dominated by the state-owned company SN SOSUCO, the sole national producer. Production increased from 25 000 t in 2018 to 28 000 t in 2019, supported by the Ministry of Industry's measures to promote local sales and the launch of the national industrialization strategy, which prioritized the sugar sector. This growth in output lifted total market volume from 25 238 t to 29 941 t over the same period.

Production declined to 25 000 t in 2020 as smuggling and counterfeit sugar imports continued to threaten local industry. However, by 2021, enhanced enforcement against illegal trade practices helped SN SOSUCO rebound to 30 000 t, with market volume reaching 30 119 t. The government maintained fixed maximum prices for granulated and cube sugar to protect consumers, and no new major producers or facilities entered the market, contributing to stable output of 30 000 t through 2023.

Market volume stabilized at 31 049 t in 2022 before easing to 30 000 t in 2023. Regulatory measures such as purchase limits during fasting periods and ongoing anti-fraud operations shaped distribution without fundamentally altering total market size. International factors including global inflation and supply chain disruptions presented additional external pressures on the market in later years.
