The millet market in South-eastern Asia maintained a stable volume around 240 thousand tons from 2018 to 2020, even as domestic production declined. Government initiatives to promote cultivation and growing consumer awareness of the grain's nutritional benefits sustained demand, which was increasingly met by rising imports.

Market volume expanded to 256 thousand tons in 2021, driven by the launch of diverse millet-based packaged foods and the entry of new startups focused on health-conscious consumers. Major policy measures, including India's Production Linked Incentive Scheme and the global declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets, subsequently underpinned a strong recovery in domestic production, which reached 173 thousand tons in 2023.
