From 2018 to 2020, millet production in Mali increased from 1 840 thousand tonnes to 1 921 thousand tonnes. This growth was supported by the large-scale diffusion of hybrid seed production technologies for millet and sorghum through partnerships between the Malian Seed Association and cooperatives, as well as the implementation of a national agricultural mechanization program that raised farm equipment rates.

In 2021, production volume fell sharply to 1 488 thousand tonnes.

Production recovered to 1 845 thousand tonnes in 2022 and reached 1 943 thousand tonnes in 2023. The rebound was driven by the validation of the Marshall Plan 2022‑2024 for the agricultural sector and government decisions from the Superior Council of Agriculture in March 2022 to incentivize producers. In 2023, continued support for farm mechanization and dedicated funding for agricultural development further sustained the expansion.

Mali's millet production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 921 thousand tonnes of millet, showing a modest year-on-year rise of 2.3%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 28.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.8%.

Exports millet from Mali

Millet exports from Mali declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 403.2 tonnes of millet, indicating a moderate year-on-year decrease of 6.4%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 22.7%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 8.2%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 539.7 tonnes.
