The market volume for milled and broken rice in Pakistan fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. It started at 3.6 million tons in 2018, grew to 5.3 million tons in 2020 and further to 6.6 million tons in 2021. A sharp contraction followed in 2022, bringing the volume down to 3.9 million tons, before a strong recovery to 6.3 million tons in 2023.

From 2022 through 2024, India's series of export restrictions on non-basmati and broken rice, including export bans and a 20% levy, altered regional trade dynamics. These measures increased world rice prices and affected supply chains in South Asia, influencing Pakistan's export environment and market access.

Pakistan's production of milled rice and broken rice grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 8 938 K t, marking a 12.3% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 17.4%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 5.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 7 452 K t, with the largest decline occurring that same year at 2.1%.

Pakistan's production value of milled rice and broken rice increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 4 460 M $ US, showing a strong rise of 18.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 23.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 7.4%.
