The milled rice and broken rice market in Myanmar experienced a substantial contraction over the 2018-2023 period, falling from 19.5 million tons to 14.6 million tons. The decline was most pronounced between 2019 and 2020, when market volume dropped by over 2.8 million tons.

After reaching a low of 14.5 million tons in 2021, the market saw a modest rebound to 15.0 million tons in 2022 before edging down again to 14.6 million tons in 2023. This overall reduction of nearly 5 million tons represents a significant shift in domestic availability.

Myanmar's production of milled rice and broken rice fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 16 701 thousand tonnes, marking a 14.2% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production dropped by 15.9%, with an average annual decline of 5.6%. The highest output was in 2018 at 20 066 thousand tonnes, which saw a modest increase of 1.0%.

Myanmar's exports of milled rice and broken rice grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export volumes reached 890.7 thousand tonnes, up 9.7% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 23.3%, averaging 7.2% per year. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 530.3 thousand tonnes, which fell by 26.6%. The largest jump occurred in 2019, with a 53.2% increase.

Between 2017 and 2020, Belgium, China, and Indonesia were the top destinations for Myanmar's milled rice and broken rice exports. Belgium accounted for 32.6% of exports in volume, China for 14.6%, and Indonesia for 9.8%, together making up 56.9% of total export flows.

Myanmar's export earnings from milled rice and broken rice increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 330.4 million US dollars, a sharp rise of 48.3% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 52.4%, with an average annual rate of 15.1%. The lowest value was in 2018 at 183.9 million US dollars, which declined by 15.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, China, and Indonesia were the leading buyers of Myanmar's milled rice and broken rice in value terms. Belgium represented 27.3% of export value, China 25.2%, and Indonesia 8.2%, collectively accounting for 60.7% of total exports.
