The market for milled rice and broken rice in Hungary showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Market volume grew from 45 128 t in 2018 to a peak of 50 165 t in 2022, but this followed a sharp contraction to 37 492 t in 2021. By 2023, the market had declined again to 44 348 t.

These movements were primarily driven by changes in import volumes, which form the largest component of supply. Imports fell by 21% between 2019 and 2021, then surged by 33% in 2022, closely mirroring the market's downturn and recovery. Domestic production varied between 5 097 t and 7 492 t, while exports remained below 4 600 t throughout the period.

Hungary's production of milled rice and broken rice reached 6,000 tonnes in 2021, marking a significant 17.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2018 to 2021, production fell by 15.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 5.4%. The highest production level was recorded in 2020 at 7,000 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase of 5.6% also occurring that year.

In 2021, Hungary exported 4,551 tonnes of milled rice and broken rice, representing a 4.0% increase from the year before. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports grew by 19.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.2%. The peak export volume was in 2019 at 4,580 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 20.4%. In contrast, exports experienced their biggest decline in 2020, dropping by 4.4%.

From 2018 to 2021, Slovakia, Romania, and Germany were the top destinations for Hungary's milled rice and broken rice exports by volume. Slovakia accounted for 40.1% of exports, Romania for 26.6%, and Germany for 26.2%. Together, these three countries made up 92.9% of Hungary's total export flows in this category.

During the 2018-2021 period, Slovakia, Germany, and Romania remained the leading destinations for Hungary's milled rice and broken rice exports by value. Italy supplied 38.9% of imports, Slovakia 18.7%, and Myanmar 9.2%. Together, these three countries accounted for 66.8% of Hungary's total import flows in this category.
