Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the Egyptian milled rice market expanded significantly. In 2018, market volume stood at 2 171 thousand tons. The jump to 3 105 thousand tons in 2019 was driven by increased planting areas through dry direct seeding technology and the entry of new players boosting production capacity. State-owned companies continued to provide support through subsidies and infrastructure. Despite COVID-19 disrupting supply chains in 2020, adjustments to import policies and sustained government backing helped the market reach 3 170 thousand tons.

Market volume dipped to 2 796 thousand tons in 2021, a period that saw changes in packaging requirements to enhance product quality and the emergence of new broken rice products for export markets. Recovery began in 2022, with volume rising to 2 841 thousand tons as a local production surplus of around 400 thousand tons increased availability and lowered prices, supported by the government's move to fix strategic reserves. A sharp rebound followed in 2023, with volume reaching 3 596 thousand tons, fueled by the adoption of modern farming technologies to counter rising labor and seedling costs, alongside government initiatives to balance supply and demand.

In 2024, key developments included the continued application of dry direct seeding and laser leveling techniques to improve yield quality, as well as an official government decision to channel rice exports through the 'Future of Egypt' apparatus to strengthen market positioning.
