The maize market volume in Myanmar demonstrated considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 1.7 million tons in 2018, it contracted sharply to 1.1 million tons in 2019 and continued declining to 892,000 tons in 2020.

A partial recovery followed, with the market reaching 1 million tons in 2011, but another downturn brought volume down to 768,000 tons in 2022. By 2023, the market had risen again to 988,000 tons, remaining substantially below its initial peak.

Myanmar's maize production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 2 072 K t of maize, marking a moderate gain of 4.4% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 8.5%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 2.8%.

Exports maize from Myanmar

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, China, and the Philippines were the key destinations for Myanmar's maize exports in kind. Thailand accounted for 42.3% of exports, China for 28.1%, and the Philippines for 13.0%, together making up 83.4% of total export flows.

Maize shipments from Myanmar to abroad have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 382.7 M $ US, showing a steep uptick of 61.7% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 25.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 7.9%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 222.5 M $ US, with the largest decline that year at 27.0%.

After a two-year gain, Myanmar's imported maize volumes declined. In 2020, import volume reached 11 K t, corresponding to a decline of 8.6% compared to the previous year.
