The milled rice and broken rice market in Middle Africa expanded from 2.0 million tonnes in 2018 to 2.7 million tonnes by 2020, driven largely by imports. A substantial trade deficit and significant imports from G7 and BRICS countries supplied the market in 2018, while a shortage of Cameroonian rice in distribution channels, particularly in Yaoundé, led to increased imports to meet demand in 2019. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, enhanced intra-regional trade within Central Africa helped maintain market volume in 2020.

Market growth continued into 2021 and 2022, peaking at 3.0 million tonnes in 2022, sustained by massive rice imports despite import-substitution policies. Regulatory pressure on operators to import 150 000 tonnes by end-2023 spurred purchases in 2022, while training for local producers by AfricaRice and IRAD supported domestic production growth. In 2023, market volume fell to 2.6 million tonnes, though in value terms it remained stable at $2.0 billion, suggesting shifts in prices or consumption patterns.
