The barley market in Middle Africa contracted sharply from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling from 3 209 t to 1 024 t. This decline was primarily caused by a collapse in imports, which dropped from 2 197 t to 23 t, while domestic production remained stable at around 1 000 t per year.

In 2024, imports remained low at 18 t. Supply was constrained by maritime trade disruptions, including port strikes and extreme weather that hindered logistics, alongside foreign exchange regulations in the CEMAC zone which limited access to currency for importers.

Barley production in Middle Africa has declined for two consecutive years. In 2020, the region produced 983 tonnes of barley, showing minimal change from the previous year. Looking back, production peaked in 2018 at 1 012 tonnes. The most significant decrease occurred in 2019 with a 2.7% drop, while the largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 3.3%.
