Between 2018 and 2021, Mauritania's milled rice market volume increased from 213 thousand tonnes to 249.2 thousand tonnes. This upward trend was initiated by a government production target of over 340,000 tonnes for the 2018/2019 season, which spurred expansion of irrigated cultivation areas in regions like Trarza and Gorgol. Domestic production rose steadily from 143.5 thousand tonnes to 205.0 thousand tonnes over these years, compensating for falling imports and driving overall market growth.

In 2022, the market volume contracted to 235.3 thousand tonnes as high food price inflation, particularly for rice, limited household purchasing power. This inflation was exacerbated by rising global commodity prices, increased transport costs, the Ukraine crisis, and a 30% fuel price hike following reduced state subsidies. By 2023, the market showed a slight recovery to 239.5 thousand tonnes, supported by consistent rice supplies despite ongoing consumer price pressures, with local rice prices 13% above the five-year average.

Throughout the period, national rice production progressively covered a larger portion of domestic consumption, reaching 89% of needs in the 2022-2023 season. This was underpinned by continued government emphasis on rehabilitating and developing irrigated land for rice cultivation, which helped maintain market stability amid external shocks.
