From 2018 to 2021, the semi-milled or wholly milled rice market in Mauritania expanded consistently, with volume growing from 151 thousand tons to 214 thousand tons. This increase was primarily driven by sustained government measures to boost domestic production, including investments in irrigation infrastructure, rehabilitation of dams, pest control, and subsidized supply of fertilizers and herbicides. The state's targeting of 348,400 tons of paddy rice from 67,000 irrigated hectares in 2018 set a foundation for growth, which continued into 2019 with further support for crop protection.

After a modest contraction to 203 thousand tons in 2022, the market recovered to 224 thousand tons in 2023. A key milestone was the achievement of rice self-sufficiency, announced by the National Union of Mauritanian Employers, supported by increased local output. Earlier, in 2021, a financing agreement with the French Development Agency earmarked funds for gender diversification in agriculture and bolstered producer cooperatives and commercialization structures, reinforcing the sector's capacity.
