Earlier Report Observations

Tanzania's milk production experienced a slight dip in 2019, attributed to persistent raw milk quality issues, poor rural infrastructure, and handling practices that constrained local supply. From 2020 onward, the market entered a phase of strong and consistent growth. This turnaround was driven by the Tanzania Dairy Board's strategy to boost domestic production and improve quality, alongside the expansion of the school milk program which increased formal demand.

The establishment of milk collection centers in key production zones and a shift toward improved cattle breeds, yielding significantly higher milk volumes per cow, were fundamental to raising output. Continued government commitment through the Dairy Industry Transformation and Climate Change Project, which focused on modern breeding technologies and training for livestock experts, provided ongoing support for productivity gains throughout the period.
