The goat meat market volume in Tanzania expanded significantly from 64.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 112.9 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was only interrupted in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic caused temporary disruptions, reducing the market volume to 71.3 thousand tons.

Recovery and subsequent expansion were propelled by government-led initiatives to enhance livestock health. Investments in vaccine production capacity, notably by Hester Biosciences Africa, strengthened disease resilience, allowing market volume to rebound to 74.6 thousand tons in 2021 and continue climbing.

Further acceleration came from focused efforts to improve goat breeds and meat quality, driven by rising export demand from Gulf states. By 2023, Tanzania's strong export performance and government measures to secure air freight logistics supported a surge in market volume to 112.9 thousand tons, solidifying its position as a leading regional supplier.

Tanzania's goat meat production saw a two-year rise before declining. In 2019, production peaked at 77 390 tonnes, marking an 18.9% increase from the previous year. However, by 2020, output fell to 71 500 tonnes, a 7.6% drop compared to 2019. Over the entire 2017–2020 period, production grew by 26%, averaging an annualized rate of 8.0%.

Tanzania's goat meat exports declined for the third year in a row in 2020, totaling 222 tonnes—a sharp 42.8% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 84.3%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -46.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates was the primary buyer of Tanzanian goat meat, accounting for 74.9% of total exports in volume, while a diverse group of other countries made up the rest.

The export market for goat meat from Tanzania showed an unstable trend during this period. In 2018, exports reached a peak of 3 246 thousand US dollars, a 12.8% increase from the previous year. However, by 2019, they experienced the largest decline of 70.6%, and in 2020, exports fell further to 571 thousand US dollars, a 40.1% drop from 2019. Overall, from the peak in 2018 to the trough in 2020, exports decreased by a factor of 5.7.
