The volume of the milk market in Slovenia fluctuated between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 378.8 thousand tons in 2018, it rose slightly to 381.1 thousand tons in 2019 before declining over the next two years to 367.8 thousand tons in 2021. A recovery followed in 2022, bringing the market back to 378.2 thousand tons, but another drop occurred in 2023, reducing volume to 363.1 thousand tons.

Domestic milk production trended downward over the same period, falling from 631.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 607.8 thousand tons in 2023. Imports, after a dip in 2019-2022, increased sharply to 56.0 thousand tons in 2023, while exports remained relatively stable with some yearly variations.

Slovenia's milk production rebounded after two years of decline. In 2019, production hit its lowest point at 626 thousand tonnes, but then increased by 1.2% in 2020 to reach 633 thousand tonnes. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 2.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 0.9%. The most significant drop occurred in 2018, when production fell by 2.9%.

After two consecutive years of decline, Slovenia's milk exports showed growth. In 2019, exports reached their lowest level at 291.8 thousand tonnes, with a notable decline of 5.3% that year. However, in 2020, exports rebounded to 310.5 thousand tonnes, marking a 6.4% increase compared to the previous year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy and Croatia were the primary destinations for Slovenia's milk exports, accounting for the majority of shipments. Other markets played a smaller role during this period.

Slovenia's milk exports in value terms saw fluctuations over the years. In 2018, exports peaked at 138.2 million US dollars, with a 3.9% increase that year. However, in 2019, exports dropped to 130.9 million US dollars, representing a 5.3% decline. By 2020, exports recovered slightly to 135.0 million US dollars, showing a modest 3.1% rise compared to 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Croatia, and Serbia were the key markets for Slovenia's milk exports in value terms. Italy accounted for 49.5% of export value, Croatia for 25.5%, and Serbia for 8.2%. Together, these three countries represented 83.2% of Slovenia's total milk export value during this period.

Imports milk to Slovenia

Slovenia's milk imports in volume terms varied between 2017 and 2020. In 2018, imports reached their highest point at 55.7 thousand tonnes, with a 10.7% increase that year. However, in 2019, imports fell to 47.3 thousand tonnes, marking a sharp decline of 15.1%. By 2020, imports recovered slightly to 48.7 thousand tonnes, showing a 3.0% rise compared to 2019. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 3.2%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 1.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Hungary, Austria, and Czechia were the main suppliers of milk to Slovenia in volume terms. Hungary contributed 32.2% of imports, Austria 24.4%, and Czechia 12.5%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 69.1% of Slovenia's total milk imports by volume during this period.

However, in 2019, imports dropped sharply by 16.0%. By 2020, imports amounted to 40.2 million US dollars, which was 1.4% lower than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 12.9%, translating to an average annual decline of 4.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovenia's milk imports in value terms came from a diverse range of suppliers. Austria was the largest contributor with 20.2% of import value, followed by Poland at 14.6% and Hungary at 14.3%. Together, these three countries accounted for 49.1% of total import value, while numerous other countries held smaller but still significant shares.
