Earlier Report Observations

The melon market in Grenada opened the period at 1 327 tons in 2018, a level supported by the launch of the Flavours of Grenada food festival which promoted local agricultural products and by the active role of the state-owned Marketing and National Importing Board (MNIB) in domestic and international distribution. However, the market declined to 1 162 tons in 2019 as persistent technical barriers and logistical challenges, particularly in cold storage and air transport for fresh produce, constrained the supply chain. This was followed by a sharp contraction to 718 tons in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted export logistics and reduced demand from the tourism sector.

A post-pandemic recovery began in 2021, with the market volume rising to 805 tons aided by government measures to support local producers and the implementation of new policies to improve product traceability and labeling for international markets. The following year saw the market decrease again to 613 tons, a period during which state policies aimed at strengthening the agricultural value chain were in effect and tourist demand was recovering. The market experienced a modest rebound to 646 tons in 2023.
