Earlier Report Observations
Following a peak in exports in 2017, the U.S. melon market contracted to 2.8 million tons in 2019 as climatic factors constrained production. However, from 2020 onward, growing consumer demand for fresh and healthy products, along with the emergence of convenient pre-cut and pre-packaged segments, began to stimulate consumption, leading to a gradual recovery.
In subsequent years, innovations such as the launch of greenhouse-grown Solara™ melons in 2022 improved quality and year-round supply consistency, supporting production growth. Simultaneously, per-capita watermelon consumption rose from 15.5 pounds in 2022 to 16.9 pounds in 2023, reflecting sustained consumer interest. These factors, coupled with advances in storage and distribution, drove a significant market volume increase to 3.3 million tons in 2023.
