Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, Brazil's fresh papaya production volume grew from 1 065 тыс. т to 1 260 тыс. т. This expansion was primarily driven by the adoption of cloned Tainung seedlings, with planted area increasing from an initial program in 2018 to 200 ha by 2021, enhancing yield potential. Concurrently, the implementation of the phytosanitary System Approach in Espírito Santo production hubs facilitated quarantine-free access to EU markets, while the entry of new export players like Doce Fruit boosted external demand. Government support policies through Brapex further encouraged production and export growth.

Production declined to 1 189 тыс. т in 2022 and 1 140 тыс. т in 2023, mainly due to adverse weather. Heavy rains and the La Niña phenomenon in 2022 damaged crops, and subsequent summer rains in 2022/23 reduced productivity in key states like Espírito Santo and Bahia. Despite the volume drop, exports continued to rise, supported by the opening of new markets such as Chile and strengthened air logistics, helping Brazil become the world's third-largest papaya exporter. The 'Frutas do Brasil' internationalization program also consolidated quality standards and market access.

In value terms, the market increased from 1 200 млн $ in 2018 to 1 544 млн $ in 2023, even as physical volumes fell. This was largely due to higher prices caused by supply constraints from weather events and inflationary pressure that reduced domestic consumption but elevated product value. The ongoing traceability requirements under Joint Normative Instruction No. 2/2018 and international quality certification maintained the premium positioning of Brazilian papaya in export markets.
