The fresh melon market in Bangladesh saw a temporary contraction in 2019, with production falling to 229 thousand tonnes. This decline coincided with the enforcement of stricter food safety and labeling regulations, including the Food Safety Act 2013 and subsequent packaging and contaminant rules, which likely introduced compliance adjustments for domestic producers. The market rebounded strongly in 2020, reaching 296 thousand tonnes, marking the start of a sustained expansion period.

From 2020 to 2022, market volume more than doubled, peaking at 600 thousand tonnes. This rapid growth was primarily driven by a significant expansion in domestic melon cultivation over the preceding 4-5 years, supported by rising consumer demand for healthier foods. Concurrent investments in cold chain infrastructure and storage reduced post-harvest losses and improved distribution, further boosting the available market supply.

By 2023, the market growth moderated, with volume stabilizing at 619 thousand tonnes. The earlier expansionary phase was underpinned by continued trends, including enhanced food safety initiatives and a shift in consumer preferences towards nutritious, fresh fruits like melons, which solidified the market at its elevated level.
