From 2018 to 2020, the European market for mandarins, clementines, and hybrids expanded steadily, with volume rising from 3,549 to 5,376 thousand tonnes. This growth was supported by the expansion of citrus acreage in Spain and Italy and the introduction of new hybrid varieties like clemenvilla, which met consumer demand for sweeter, easy-to-peel fruit. The entry of new producers focused on these hybrids helped extend the marketing season.

Market volume declined to 4,823 thousand tonnes in 2021 and further to 4,247 thousand tonnes in 2022. The 2021 decrease coincided with sustained export demand for European citrus, which diverted supply from the domestic market. In 2022, unfavorable weather conditions reduced harvests, while global supply chain disruptions linked to the pandemic constrained fruit availability and affected prices.

In 2023, the market recovered to 5,000 thousand tonnes, indicating a rebound from the previous years' lows.
