Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2019, Brazil's mandarin, clementine, and citrus hybrid market volume remained stable at around 995–998 thousand tonnes. This period saw the implementation of national identity and quality standards for fruit juices, including tangerine juice, which regulated processing methods, alongside broader federal decree changes affecting the agricultural sector.
Market volume grew by over 4% in 2020 and nearly 6% in 2021, reaching 1.1 million tonnes. This expansion was driven by continued investment and scaling in Brazil's citrus chain, reflected in a 17% surge in orange juice exports by late 2022, which bolstered overall citrus production capacity.
In 2022, market volume plateaued just above 1.1 million tonnes. A 45% increase in accumulated rainfall from August 2022 to April 2023 supported the harvest, while breeding programs released new hybrid mandarin cultivars like IAC 2019 Maria, aiming for disease resistance. However, the ongoing impact of greening disease limited growth. By 2023, production and market volume fell by approximately 3%, as the persistent pressure from greening constrained output.
