Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the domestic market for fresh melons and papayas in Brazil showed moderate growth, reaching 3.7 million t in 2020. This period was characterized by the expansion of planted areas and the introduction of new export-oriented varieties, such as Cantaloupe and Gália, aiming at higher sugar content and taste. In 2020, the opening of the Chinese market for Brazilian melons in the second half of the year created additional export opportunities.

Starting in 2021, the domestic market volume declined, falling to 3.4 million t by 2023. The devaluation of the Brazilian real and increased international flights in 2021 made exports more attractive, leading to higher external shipments and reduced domestic supply. In 2022, Brazilian fruit exports, including melons and papayas, faced a drop due to reduced area and climatic problems in Europe, particularly in Spain. In 2023, favorable climatic conditions in Rio Grande do Norte, driven by El Niño-induced drought, supported melon production, while low European supply and high international demand continued to bolster exports, further tightening domestic availability.
