The malt market in Mexico experienced a decline from 1 397 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 115 thousand tons in 2020. This contraction was primarily driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global supply chains for raw materials, caused logistical bottlenecks, and reduced demand, leading to a sharp drop in imports.

A partial recovery followed in 2021, with the market reaching 1 186 thousand tons as companies adjusted their strategies to the ongoing pandemic impacts. However, in 2022, market volume fell again to 1 040 thousand tons due to continued import constraints from supply chain issues, even though domestic production rose supported by growing demand from the food, beverage, and other industries. By 2023, the market expanded to 1 164 thousand tons, fueled by a surge in imports alongside recovering logistics and increased demand for specialty malts from Mexico's growing craft beer sector.

Mexico's malt production grew for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 741.4 K t of malt, representing a modest 0.8% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production declined by 2.7%, which translates to an annualized rate of 0.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 677.8 K t, with the largest annual decrease of 11.0% occurring that same year. In contrast, the largest annual increase of 8.5% was observed in 2020.

The lowest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 379.7 K t, which also saw the largest annual decline of 28.1%.

Between 2018 and 2021, imports declined by 10.4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 3.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 190.4 M $ US, which experienced the largest annual drop of 32.6%.
