The malt market in Pakistan experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 2 264 tonnes in 2018, market volume dropped by over 22% to 1 755 tonnes in 2019 and further declined to 1 589 tonnes in 2020. This was followed by a sharp recovery, with the market expanding by nearly 45% to 2 302 tonnes in 2021 and reaching a peak of 3 013 tonnes in 2022, before a modest contraction to 2 818 tonnes in 2023.

The fluctuations in total market volume were largely influenced by changes in import levels, which account for the majority of supply. Imports fell from 1 860 tonnes in 2018 to 1 383 tonnes in 2020, contributing to the market decline. The subsequent surge in imports to over 2 777 tonnes in 2022 drove the market to its highest point. Domestic production, while smaller in scale, also varied, falling from 404 tonnes in 2018 to 236 tonnes in 2022 before increasing to 287 tonnes in 2023.

The market's turning point occurred in 2021, when import volumes rebounded strongly, leading to two consecutive years of growth. Despite the slight dip in 2023, the overall market volume remained well above the levels seen during the 2019-2020 period.

Malt production in Pakistan has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 295.7 tons of malt, marking an 18.3% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 20.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -7.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 404.2 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 9.0% that year.

Pakistan's malt import volume has dropped for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 1 383 tons, a slight decrease of 0.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 span, imports fell by 25.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -9.2%. The peak was in 2018 at 1 860 tons, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 25.1% drop. The biggest increase was recorded in 2018 at 0.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Pakistan's malt imports in volume were heavily concentrated on China and Ukraine, which together accounted for 97.6% of total imports, with other partners contributing minimally.

Malt imports into Pakistan have decreased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country imported 719.9 thousand US dollars worth of malt, reflecting a significant decline of 13.4% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports actually rose by 21.8%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 6.8%. The highest value was in 2018 at 851.1 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 44.0% that year.
