That year, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0 Upgrade Protocol was signed in October, enhancing trade cooperation for agricultural products including cassava starch. Meanwhile, the newly operational China-Laos Railway started carrying full-train shipments of cassava starch from Laos to China, altering traditional supply routes.

From 2017 to 2020, the largest buyers of cassava starch from Eastern Asia were Kyrgyzstan, accounting for 15.5% of exports in kind, Ghana with 11.9%, and Asia, not elsewhere specified, at 6.0%. From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of exports in value terms was highly diversified. Asia, not elsewhere specified, accounted for 20.4% of exports in value terms, Kyrgyzstan for 12.7%, and Ghana for 11.6%. Together, these three accounted for only 44.7% of total flows, while the remaining 55.3% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 15.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 4.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2,149,000 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 14.4%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 17.9% rise.
