Earlier Report Observations

The African malt market, dominated by Nigeria with 74% of continental sales, demonstrated early resilience. In 2018, an economic downturn prompted major manufacturers to introduce smaller pack sizes, such as 33cl PET bottles, to sustain sales amid weakened consumer purchasing power. This adaptation helped maintain market volume at 1 421.6 thousand tonnes that year. The market then expanded to 1 492.1 thousand tonnes by 2020.

Regulatory shifts in Nigeria became a key driver by 2022, as new sugar content classifications spurred significant product innovation. This led to the launch of Malta Guinness Herbs Lite, the market's first low-sugar malt drink, and the relaunch of Amstel Malta with a no-added-sugar variant, directly responding to growing health consciousness among consumers. These innovations coincided with a period of market stabilization, with volume hovering around 1 563 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 2022.

Market growth resumed in 2023, with volume reaching 1 636.5 thousand tonnes, bolstered by strong brand recognition as exemplified by Malta Guinness being crowned the iconic malt drink of the year. Moving into 2024, continued consumer engagement through digital marketing campaigns and packaging refreshes, alongside economic factors like inflation affecting pricing, shaped the market's evolution.
