From 2018 to 2020, the maize market volume in Jamaica increased from 258.4 thousand tonnes to 285.0 thousand tonnes in 2019, then slightly declined to 277.6 thousand tonnes in 2020. The initial growth was supported by rising global demand for maize as animal feed, while the 2020 dip reflected supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

After 2020, the market recovered and peaked at 339.3 thousand tonnes in 2022, fueled by continued global demand for feed and biofuels, as well as severe droughts in the United States in 2021 that tightened worldwide supply and influenced trade flows. In 2023, the market volume decreased to 323.4 thousand tonnes.

Throughout the period, domestic maize production remained minimal at around 2 thousand tonnes annually, with imports serving as the primary supply source, rising from 257.1 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 321.7 thousand tonnes in 2023.
