Earlier Report Observations

The broken rice market in Jamaica contracted steadily from 31 568 t in 2018 to 28 403 t in 2023. Domestic production fluctuated between 19 000 t and 21 000 t, while imports fell from over 11 700 t in 2018 to around 9 700 t in 2023, contributing to the overall decline in market volume.

In 2023, global market conditions tightened significantly. India imposed a ban on non-basmati white rice exports, including broken rice, which reduced worldwide supply. Simultaneously, El Niño-related droughts lowered production in Thailand, a key exporter. These factors drove international rice prices to record highs, making imports more expensive and likely reducing the volume of broken rice available in Jamaica. By 2024, India began easing its trade policy, but El Niño continued to affect output in exporting countries, keeping upward pressure on prices and limiting import flows into Jamaica.
