From 2018 to 2020, the maize market in the Americas showed variable volume, with overall production growth underpinned by technological advances and yield improvements in North America. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains in 2020, but concurrently, rising demand for maize as animal feed, particularly from Brazil's growing livestock sector, supported market consumption.

Market volume expanded significantly in 2021, driven primarily by the continued expansion of livestock production in Brazil, which increased domestic maize consumption. A contraction occurred in 2022, while consumer interest in organically cultivated maize continued to grow, indicating a diversification of product segments within the market.

The approval of five new genetically modified maize varieties in Argentina during 2023, featuring traits for insect resistance and herbicide tolerance, strengthened crop stability and export potential, contributing to a market rebound. Entering 2024, drought conditions in South America and new U.S. FDA testing mandates for imports introduced challenges, while rising demand for maize in biofuel and industrial applications emerged as a persistent growth driver.

Maize production in the Americas increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 580.2 million tonnes of maize were produced, representing a modest year-over-year growth of 3.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 549.2 million tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 5.0%.

In 2020, maize output in the Americas was valued at 112.9 billion US dollars, showing a moderate increase of 4.2% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value grew by 14.5%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 4.6%. In 2020, the Americas exported 65 879 thousand tonnes of maize, reflecting a notable drop of 10.7% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 16.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.2%. The lowest export volume was in 2018 at 45 051 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 73 807 thousand tonnes. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 20.4%, and the most substantial increase occurred in 2019 at 63.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam, Egypt, and Iran were among the largest buyers of maize from the Americas, accounting for 13.9%, 8.9%, and 7.8% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they represented just 30.6% of total exports, indicating a broadly diversified partner base.

In 2020, the Americas exported 12 820 million US dollars worth of maize, which was 9.8% lower than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 32.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 9 236 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 14 209 million US dollars. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 53.8%.

The structure of maize exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 can be described as diversified. Vietnam, Egypt, and Iran accounted for 13.4%, 8.7%, and 7.8% of exports in value, respectively, totaling just 29.9% of total flows, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position.
