Maize bran, sharps and residues market in Caribbean

Between 2018 and 2019, the Caribbean market for maize bran, sharps and residues expanded from 31 712 t to 33 815 t. During this period, regional trade activity was noted, with Zimbabwe exporting maize bran residues to South Africa, indicating active market movements beyond the Caribbean.

The market volume then contracted sharply to 17 893 t in 2020. It recovered over the next two years, reaching a peak of 35 033 t in 2022, before easing to 32 276 t in 2023.

Caribbean's production of maize bran, sharps, and residues has declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 9 043 tonnes, representing a 27.2% year-over-year decrease. Between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 44.1%, which translates to an annualized decline of 17.6%.

Imports maize bran, sharps and residues to Caribbean

Following two years of growth, Caribbean's imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues declined. In 2020, imports reached 8 850 tonnes, a sharp drop of 58.6% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 47.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 19.2%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 21 389 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 20.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, imports in kind of maize bran, sharps, and residues to the Caribbean were almost entirely concentrated in the United States, which held a 98.1% share.

After two years of gains, imports of maize bran, sharps, and residues to the Caribbean declined. In 2020, the Caribbean imported 2 245 thousand US dollars worth of these products, marking an abrupt decline of 52.9% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 26.7%, translating to an annualized rate of 9.9%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 4 762 thousand US dollars, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 27.3%.
