The market for bran, sharps, and residues from cereal and legume processing in Uganda expanded significantly from 2018 to 2022, with physical volume rising from 207.1 thousand tons to 345.1 thousand tons. This growth of over 65% was marked by particularly strong increases in 2021 and 2022, where the market grew by 31% and 19% respectively.

Following a temporary contraction to 188.3 thousand tons in 2019, market volume recovered in 2020 and maintained its upward trend. The peak reached in 2022 was followed by a reduction to 301.1 thousand tons in 2023, a 13% decrease from the prior year, though volume remained well above the levels seen at the start of the period.

In value terms, the market increased from $37.9 million in 2018 to $91.1 million in 2022, before falling to $61.1 million in 2023. The sharper rise and subsequent fall in market value indicate concurrent shifts in pricing or the composition of products sold.
