The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Slovenia contracted significantly over the period from 2018 to 2022. The total market volume fell by more than two-thirds, dropping from 19,060 t in 2018 to a low of 6,134 t in 2022.

This steep decline coincided with a dramatic and sustained reduction in import volumes, which plummeted from 12,506 t in 2018 to just 116 t in 2022. Domestic production levels, while fluctuating between 6,300 t and 7,500 t, proved more stable and were insufficient to offset the loss of imported material.

A turning point emerged in 2023 as the market volume stabilized and saw a modest recovery to 6,589 t. This was accompanied by a slight uptick in imports and consistent export activity, suggesting a potential shift in market dynamics after several years of contraction.

In Slovenia, production of maize bran, sharps and residues reached 7 324 tonnes in 2020, marking a significant 15.4% increase compared to 2019. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 52.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 15.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 7 476 tonnes, which represented a substantial 55.2% increase from the previous year. However, production experienced its largest decline in 2019, dropping by 15.1%.

The export market for maize bran, sharps and residues from Slovenia showed noticeable fluctuations during the period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2017, then peaked in 2019 at 1 025 tonnes, creating a 2.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports declined to 853 tonnes, representing a 16.8% decrease compared to 2019. The most significant growth occurred in 2018, with exports surging by 87.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovenia's exports of maize bran, sharps and residues were almost exclusively directed to Italy, which accounted for 100.0% of total export volume.

Export values for maize bran, sharps and residues from Slovenia followed an unstable trend throughout the period. The lowest value was recorded in 2017, while the highest reached 171 thousand US dollars in 2019, creating a 2.3-fold gap between these years. In 2020, export value declined to 138 thousand US dollars, representing a significant 19.2% decrease year-over-year. The most substantial increase occurred in 2018, with values jumping by 98.1%.

During 2017-2020, Italy was virtually the sole destination for Slovenia's maize bran, sharps and residues exports, absorbing 100.0% of total export value.

Slovenia's imports of maize bran, sharps and residues declined for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 2 675 tonnes. This represented a 41.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 85.8%, equivalent to an annualized decline rate of 47.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, two markets dominated Slovenia's imports of maize bran, sharps and residues in volume terms: Croatia and Hungary together accounted for 97.9% of total imports, while the remaining volume was distributed among various other countries.

Import values for maize bran, sharps and residues in Slovenia continued their downward trend for the third year in a row in 2020, reaching 131 thousand US dollars. This marked a substantial 43.1% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import values declined by 88.8%, representing an annualized decrease of 51.7%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Croatia and Hungary served as the primary markets for Slovenia's imports of maize bran, sharps and residues in value terms, jointly accounting for 87.3% of total import value, while other destinations maintained relatively smaller shares.
