Earlier Report Observations

Production of maize bran, sharps and residues in Ecuador grew from 149.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 158.0 thousand tons in 2020. This increase was supported by the widespread adoption of mechanization and sprinkler irrigation in maize farming, alongside the establishment of a minimum support price for hard yellow maize in 2020, which aimed to cover production costs and encourage planting. The poultry sector's consumption of 57% of national maize output provided a stable base demand for these by-products.

Market volume fell sharply to 61.7 thousand tons in 2021, a decline of over 60%. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted agricultural productivity and price stability for hard maize during this period. Concurrently, the Ministry of Agriculture implemented the 'Campo Seguro' project to insure crops against climatic threats like El Niño, highlighting efforts to manage production risks.

Output showed volatility in the following years, recovering to 69.4 thousand tons in 2022 before declining to 61.4 thousand tons in 2023. The sector's ongoing high dependence on imported inputs continued to pressure production costs and stability. Furthermore, consensus between producers and industry on the need for maize imports to meet domestic demand indicated persistent challenges in securing sufficient raw material for processing, directly affecting the supply of residues.
