The market volume for maize bran, sharps, and residues in Madagascar saw a gradual increase from 40.8 thousand t in 2018 to 41.1 thousand t in 2020. This growth was supported by initiatives aimed at boosting maize production, such as the free distribution of maize seeds in the Vakinankaratra region in 2018, which helped sustain local output and, consequently, the supply of processing residues.

After a dip to 39.6 thousand t in 2021, the market expanded sharply to 49.0 thousand t in 2022. This surge coincided with a notable rise in national maize production, which grew from 215 thousand t in 2018 to 266.7 thousand t in 2022. Authorities further reinforced this trend by implementing a Pact on Food Sovereignty and Resilience, with planned actions to double maize production by 2027, directly increasing the volume of available bran and residues.

In 2023, the market volume declined to 47.5 thousand t. This reduction was driven by a drop in maize production coupled with market speculation, which triggered a sharp price increase for maize and negatively affected the poultry sector—a key consumer of these by-products.

Madagascar's production of maize bran, sharps, and residues increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 41 148 tonnes, showing a slight rise of 0.7% compared to 2019. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually fell by 23.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 8.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 40 696 tonnes, with that year also seeing the sharpest drop of 24.7%.
