From 2018 to 2020, the market volume of made up fishing nets of man-made textile materials in Croatia grew from 121 t to 176 t, reaching a peak, then slightly declined to 172 t in 2021. During this period, domestic production consistently decreased, while imports fluctuated.

In 2022, the market volume dropped sharply to 125 t, a 27% decrease from the previous year. This decline occurred alongside limited production scale in Croatia, which lagged behind other European countries in supplying nets to neighboring markets. The following year, the market recovered to 138 t, supported by a significant 19% increase in import value indicating sustained domestic demand. Concurrently, ongoing authorization processes for fishing fleets and gear, with stricter criteria and capacity reductions in place since 2017, continued to indirectly affect the fishing industry and its demand for nets.

By 2024, the market volume fell to 123 t. That year, the European Union introduced the EN 17988 standard on circular design of fishing gear, published in November, and the revised EU Fisheries Control Regulation entered force in January. These regulatory changes, aimed at sustainability and extended producer responsibility for textiles including fishing nets, established new requirements for the market in Croatia as an EU member state.
