Earlier Report Observations

The liquid egg market in Sri Lanka reached 20,024 t in 2019 after starting at 18,278 t the previous year, then contracted to 17,869 t in 2020.

Market volume recovered to 18,658 t in 2021, driven by growing consumer demand for value-added egg products and increased private sector investment in vertically integrated operations. This expansion was tempered in 2022 when the Consumer Affairs Authority imposed maximum retail prices and persistent high production costs, linked to feed shortages and currency depreciation, contributed to a decline to 17,704 t.

The market fell further to 16,908 t in 2023 as government-approved egg imports from India increased supply, price controls remained, and oversupply led to lower producer prices. Consumer demand was also affected by high retail costs. Recent industry focus has been on State Trading Corporation-led imports, continued price monitoring, and calls for boosting local feed production to reduce dependency on imports.
