Between 2018 and 2022, the domestic market for fresh lettuce and chicory in Egypt contracted from 69 137 t to 57 883 t, a 16% decline. The lowest point was in 2021, when consumption fell to 58 311 t. The market then stabilized in 2022 with only a marginal decrease.

A sharp reversal occurred in 2023, with the market volume jumping 41% to reach 81 391 t. This growth was driven by a significant increase in domestic production, which rose to 98 750 t, while export volumes remained steady at around 17 000 t.

In 2024, Egyptian export authorities are implementing a strategy from the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade to boost fresh agricultural exports through digital promotion and international trade fairs, supporting external demand for products like lettuce. Export volumes for the year reached 15 524 t.

Egypt's lettuce and chicory production declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 78 000 tonnes, marking a 1.3% decrease compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 10.3%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.5%.

In 2020, Egypt's lettuce and chicory exports amounted to 11 569 tonnes, representing a 25.1% drop from 2019.
