Earlier Report Observations

The ASEAN market for fresh or chilled leguminous vegetables showed a variable trajectory from 2018 to 2023. After a modest increase to 1.37 million tons in 2019, consumption dipped slightly in 2020. A strong rebound followed in 2021, pushing the market to 1.41 million tons, and growth continued to a peak of 1.43 million tons in 2022. This expansion was supported by broad investments in agricultural technology and irrigation infrastructure, which raised production efficiency, alongside steady population growth that underpinned demand.

The market contracted to 1.38 million tons in 2023. The decline was primarily linked to elevated fertilizer and energy prices that persisted from the previous year, increasing production costs and putting pressure on prices. While the rise of supermarket chains and e-grocery platforms improved distribution and consumer access throughout the period, these developments did not offset the cost-related headwinds that affected the market in 2023.
