Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2023, the market volume for fresh leguminous vegetables in Syria showed considerable variability. Starting at 133.9 thousand tonnes in 2018, it fell to 112.2 thousand tonnes in 2019 before recovering to 130.3 thousand tonnes in 2020 and reaching a period high of 134.5 thousand tonnes in 2021. A subsequent decline brought the market down to 102.7 thousand tonnes in 2022, followed by a modest increase to 106.2 thousand tonnes in 2023.
In 2024, Syria's Ministry of Economy and Industry issued a directive to stop imports of 15 varieties of vegetables and fruits, aiming to enhance self-sufficiency and secure marketing channels for local producers, directly impacting the fresh vegetable market. Concurrently, production costs rose due to increased prices for agricultural fertilizers and widespread corruption, pushing up vegetable prices. The General Commission for Scientific Agricultural Research also outlined a strategy focusing on developing new plant varieties with improved yield and quality traits for key strategic crops.
