The ASEAN market for fresh carrots and turnips showed significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. After an initial contraction to 877 thousand tons in 2019, market volume recovered and grew steadily, reaching a peak of over 1.13 million tons in 2022. This expansion was interrupted in 2023 when the market size fell by roughly 8.6% to 1.04 million tons.

Domestic production mirrored this pattern, increasing from 710 thousand tons in 2018 to a high of 806 thousand tons in 2022 before declining to 738 thousand tons in 2023. Import volumes, a key supply component, varied sharply year-on-year, with a notable drop in 2019 followed by a strong recovery. These trade fluctuations played a major role in shaping the overall market size throughout the period.

Despite the dip in 2023, the market recorded a net increase of more than 110 thousand tons compared to its 2018 level. The balance between local output and international trade remained a defining feature of the regional supply landscape for carrots and turnips.

After two years of growth, ASEAN's production of carrots and turnips declined. In 2020, the region produced 723.2 thousand tonnes, which was 3.3% lower than the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 14.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 748.3 thousand tonnes, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018 at 12.2%.

Carrots and turnips exports from ASEAN grew for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 20.0 thousand tonnes, marking a 9.0% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 28%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.6%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 11.1 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 29.2%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 65.8% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for ASEAN's carrots and turnips exports in volume terms were South Korea, accounting for 25.4% of exports, the United Arab Emirates at 6.3%, and Japan also at 6.3%. Together, these three countries represented 38.0% of total export flows.

In 2020, ASEAN's cross-border shipments of carrots and turnips in value terms stood at 13.9 million US dollars, reflecting a sharp increase of 25.8% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 54.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 15.5%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 4.7%, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 28.7% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the largest buyers of carrots and turnips from ASEAN in value terms were South Korea, accounting for 26.7% of exports, the United Arab Emirates at 6.4%, and Japan at 6.1%. Combined, these three countries made up 39.2% of total export value.

Imports carrots and turnips to ASEAN

In 2019, imports reached their lowest point at 147.3 thousand tonnes, which was also the year with the largest decline of 34.2%. By 2020, imports peaked at 258.4 thousand tonnes, representing a steep increase of 75.5% compared to 2019. The difference between the peak in 2020 and the low in 2019 was 1.8-fold.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, the geographical pattern of ASEAN's carrots and turnips imports in volume terms was dominated by China and Australia, which together accounted for 93.2% of total import flows.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 12.1%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 3.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 78.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 38.2%.
