Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, production of lard and poultry fats in Malaysia increased from 1 524 t to 1 826 t, while market volume grew from 1 707 t to 2 031 t. In 2020, production remained stable at 1 824 t, but market size declined to 1 911 t. The following year, both production and market volume fell to 1 641 t and 1 678 t respectively.

In 2022, market volume rose to 1 736 t despite a drop in domestic production to 1 520 t, as imports surged to 320 t. This shift coincided with the implementation of the National Agrofood Policy 2021-2030 (DAN 2.0), which aimed to transform the livestock sector and ensure food security. Mandatory halal certification for all meat, poultry, and egg products also affected the market for lard, particularly among Muslim consumers. By 2023, production fell further to 1 275 t and market volume declined to 1 404 t, while the Department of Veterinary Services engaged with the banking sector to support livestock investments and the Ministry focused on improving product quality and safety.
