The lard and poultry fats market in SADC expanded steadily from 12.6 thousand t in 2018 to 14.1 thousand t in 2020, driven by a shift in consumer demand toward more affordable poultry and pork meat, which boosted processing volumes. This trend was reinforced by trade protection measures and the implementation of the poultry master plan, which supported local production despite challenges from animal disease outbreaks such as avian influenza.

Market volume continued to rise, reaching 15.2 thousand t in 2021 and then surging to 19.7 thousand t in 2022. However, in 2023 the market contracted to 14.5 thousand t, primarily due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreaks that disrupted production and a sharp increase in feed costs exacerbated by drought and global supply chain disruptions.

In 2024, the sector continued to face pressure from disease concerns and volatile feed prices, while regulatory efforts—including revised residue monitoring programs for EU export access—and innovations in poultry farming aimed at enhancing sustainability and resilience.

SADC's production of lard and poultry fats increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 12 942 tonnes, marking a moderate 5.7% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production declined by 2.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2018 at 11 734 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 11.5%.

The value of lard and poultry fats production in SADC rose for the second year in a row. In 2020, output reached 17 320 thousand US dollars, up 23.1% year-on-year.
